7:30 pm: BVNA General Meeting - Historic Preservation Techniques
September 5, 2018
General Meeting at Fleisher Art Memorial
Please join BVNA's next general meeting with special guest Paul Steinke from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia for a general update on the state of historic preservation task force in Philadelphia, then a look at Bella Vista's inventory of properties currently protected, and practical techniques and steps that neighbors can take to help identify and advocate for preservation of properties and/or districts.
Homeowners or non-profits can learn about available resources to help maintain historic structures, such as emergency repair credits or historic rehabilitation tax credits, tips for finding qualified contractors and appropriate materials, and general benefits and responsibilities that come with maintaining a historically designated property.
The event itself will take place in the Fleisher, itself one of the historic buildings in Bella Vista. Elizabeth Grimaldi, Executive Director of Fleisher Art Memorial, will open the meeting with an introduction to Fleisher's programming and mission.
(Subject to availability, a developer may also offer a case study on the economics that make adaptive reuse viable, including considerations such as tax credits, zoning, tax abatements, conservation overlays, building layout and condition, and other factors that may help provide a window into a decision to renovate vs replace a particular building)
Please note this presentation will be practical and aimed at empowering residents with the general knowledge of the city process and any available tools and resources, in order to proactively and productively participate in protecting, preserving and maintaining historically significant structures going forward.
