TREE PLANTING AND CARE

Bella Vista Neighbors Association and its Beautification Committee heartily support the maintenance and proliferation of our neighborhood's street trees. Besides offering up their natural beauty, these trees provide cooling shade to on-the-street pedestrians and adjacent homes and businesses. Trees absorb noise, filter pollution and can even reduce crime.

Bella Vista residents interested in properly planting and/or maintaining street trees can find a wealth of resources, including the city's street trees rules and expert planting recommendations, on the Tree Philly page from the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation.

Street trees are planted in the sidewalk or right-of-way at no cost from PHS.   Email Trees@PennHort.org to start the process. PHS will cut the concrete and plant a tree. Residents just have to water, mulch and fertilize.   Requests need to originate from the property owner or be accompanied by the property owner's permission.

Do you love trees? Do you want more trees in Bella Vista? Did you know that BV has an active tree tenders group? Train to be a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society certified Tree Tender this fall! This free four-part program will teach any tree lover the basics such as identification, planting, tree biology, and proper care. Become a neighborhood greening hero today.  Information about the Tree Tenders program can be found   here.

This program is operated by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Yard Trees -  Yard trees are planted on private property.  TreePhilly provides FREE trees, event support, mulch, education, and a small grant award. As a partner, groups would be responsible for hosting and promoting the event and connecting with the community. Community groups (faith-based organizations, civic associations, friends groups, etc.) help distribute thousands of trees every year to neighborhoods across the city.  BVNA and other community groups on occasion distribute these -- look for these in our newsletter. https://treephilly.org/yard-trees-2/

While we may initially help obtain Street and Yard trees --unfortunately, BVNA does not provide trimming service at this time.  If necessary, we can recommend an arborist.
