Introducing the Bella Vista Soup Group!

What’s a Soup Group?

A collection of neighbors who take turns making large batches of soup to share with each other.

Why join the Soup Group?

Take a night off cooking
A chance to try and learn new recipes
Opportunity to meet and get to know your neighbors!
It is soup-er fun!

How does a Soup Group work?

A group of approximately 5-7 people will rotate with making one big batch of homemade soup on a weekly basis. The other group members that are not cooking that week will come to pick up their portion at a determined time. Everyone gets to try a new homemade soup each week, but only has to cook once every 5 weeks. We recommend that group members chat and trade recipes during the weekly pick up, but the level of communication is up to you! The soup group captain will facilitate convening the groups, and then you can decide what works best for your individual groups in terms of frequency, batch size, pick up times (depending on the number of interested neighbors).

Ronaldson’s Cemetery - 1826 to 1950

In 1826, the parcel of land which now holds the Palumbo Recreation Center was James Ronaldson’s Cemetery. James Ronaldson was a prosperous businessman and one of the founders of the Franklin Institute. He had a novel idea to open a nonsectarian cemetery in the rural area of Moyamensing Township, which is now Bella Vista. At its prime, the cemetery housed approximately 14,000 permanent residents – remarkable for the size of the property. At the turn of the century and after 75 years of success, the cemetery began to show decline. The city decided to relocate the graves to a site in Somerton (NE Philadelphia). During the relocation, several Revolutionary War Soldiers were identified and moved to the grounds at Old Swedes Church in Queen Village. The graves of those soldiers can still be visited today.

Engine Company 11 - 1016 South Street

The Philadelphia Fire Department was established in 1871 to professionalize firefighting and improve the fire service for the city. The building at 1016 South Street was first used as a firehouse by a volunteer brigade in 1871. In 1902, Engine Company 11, one of the original 22 engine companies of the Philadelphia Fire Department, moved into this location. Engine Company 11 was Philadelphia’s de facto African American firehouse, hiring Isaac Jacobs as its first African American firefighter in 1886. In 1919, the Philadelphia Fire Department established an official policy of racial segregation, leading to Engine Company 11 becoming the first and only all-black company. Despite their treatment as second-class citizens and firefighters, the members of Engine Company 11 provided first-class service, risking their lives for all citizens, and for the fellow white firefighters who would not work alongside them. Engine Company 11 was relocated in 1976 to a new firehouse at 601 South Street, where it is still active today.

Tripoli Barber Supply - 606 S. 9th Street

Tripoli Barber Supply Company was established by brothers Charles, Frank, and Angelo Di Puppo, who emigrated from Italy to Philadelphia at the turn of the 20th century. As they looked to expand their business, they turned to local Italian-American architect Enrico Coscia to turn the old row home in the eye-catching façade you see today. While the business ostensibly sold barber supplies, the Di Puppo brothers were also successful bootleggers, specifically for denatured alcohol which became popular during the prohibition. Over time, the company transitioned to beauty products and was closed by the 1970s.

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper House

The Frances Ellen Watkins Harper house is one of the two Underground Railroad sites in Bella Vista. Known as “the mother of African-American journalism,” Frances Harper was a writer, poet, novelist, lecturer, and civil rights leader. Her first book of poems was published at age 20 in 1845, making her one of the first African-American published writers. She wrote and lectured on many topics, highlighting the struggles of the freed slaves and women’s suffrage. The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Frances Harper lived here from 1870 until her death in 1911.

William Still House – 625 S. Delhi Street

From 1850-1855, 625 South Delhi Street was the home of William Still , the prominent abolitionist and leader in the vigilance movement who has become known as the Father of the Underground Railroad, and his wife, Letitia who worked as a seamstress. In 1850, the year the Fugitive Slave Act became law, William Still became a Chairman within the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society and stepped up efforts to aid fugitives from slavery. DiGiorgio and Tumolillo – 927-929 S. 8th Street

Gerlondo Tumolillo moved to Philadelphia from Abruzzi, Italy prior to the Great Depression, and purchased multiple properties in South Philadelphia, and ended up owning an entire city block of row homes near 8th & Washington. These row homes came to be known as “Tumolillo Place” and were marked with this name on the cornerstone. Tumolillo did so well with these rental properties that he accumulated enormous wealth and commissioned a three-story building to be built as his own bank at 927-929 S 8th St by architect John Flynn. The building was marked with the names “DiGiorgio & Tumolillo” on it. Many people may think that DiGiorgio was Tumolillo’s business partner; however, the true case is DiGiorgio was his partner in life and he included the name in honor of his wife’s maiden name.

Columbus Hall – 744 S. 8th Street

The first recorded land and building owner of this site was the Moyamensing Hose Company, a volunteer fire company organized in 1837. It was disbanded when the professional Philadelphia Fire Department was created in 1872. This was a period when the Washington Avenue Immigration Station was receiving many new arrivals from Italy. Some of these immigrants settled here in Bella Vista, which became the second-largest “Little Italy” in America, eclipsed only by New York City. In 1874, the Moyamensing Hose Company property at 746 S. 8th St. was purchased by Societa’ di Unione e Fratellanza Italiana (The Union and Italian Brotherhood Society), who renamed the building Columbus Hall. The old firehouse was demolished, replaced by the beautiful building that still stands today. For many years, it was home to several different associations that helped Italian immigrants adjust to life in the city. They provided financial aid, social gatherings, and fellowship for newcomers.

Banca d’Bozzelli – 735- 737 S. 7th Street

Located on what was once known as “South Philly Bankers Row”, Banca d’Bozzeli was an Italian bank constructed in 1892 that acted as conduit for local Italian immigrants in each neighborhood for sending money back to the homeland and facilitating travel for their families to join them here in America. The owner of the bank, Lorenzo Bozzelli, eventually decided to build a larger bank and to include a clock tower to attract business. The Renaissance Style addition to the bank was completed in 1903. The building was sold to the Pizza (yes Pizza) family 1943 who repurposed the store into a grocery store. The building has always been, and continues to this day, to be operated and owned by immigrants.

Church of the Crucifixion - 807-811 Bainbridge St.

Constructed in 1884, the building was a shelter and refuge for some of the city’s poorest black residents, who often had to endure dangerous conditions on their walk to Church, including physical and verbal threats. Through the work of its renowned Pastor, Henry L Phillips, the Church was a leader of its time in offering social programs, including the creation of the first gymnasium in Philadelphia for blacks, as well as, the expansion and growth of various initiatives for the needy through its Home for the Homeless program. In fact, W.E.B du Bois, who was a member of the Church, claimed that no other church in the city was doing as much for the social betterment of Philadelphia Blacks as the Church of Crucifixion. Marian Anderson was a member of the Choir for this church and would often require a chair to stand on to see the conductor.

Here in Bella Vista, we love our local parks. This week is the chance to show how much by volunteering for Love Your Park Fall Service Day on Saturday, Nov. 10. Here’s where –– and how –– you can you help, and feel free to bring the kids. Events are BYOWG (Bring Your Own Work Gloves):

Bardascino Park : 10th and Carpenter streets, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. Raking, leaf shredding, bulb planting and sweeping.

Cianfrani Park : 8th and Fitzwater streets, 9:30 a.m.-noon. Focus will be on cleaning up the gardens and getting the center square ready for a holiday lighting event.

Palumbo Park : 723 Catharine St. 10 a.m. clean up, 4 p.m. Friends meeting to discuss general issues and by-laws.

Starr Garden : 6th and Lombard streets, 9 a.m.-noon. Clean up, tools provided.

Dear Neighbor,

As 2017 comes to a close, we are looking forward to a cleaner, healthier neighborhood in 2018. As you may have heard, your neighbors association has embarked on a campaign to provide twice-weekly sidewalk and curb cleaning on major streets. The work will be done by Ready, Willing and Able, a community-based nonprofit that helps people in transition.

Thanks to generous donations, BVNA has raised about a third of the $25,000 needed for a year’s worth of services.

But we still need help to reach our goal.

To those who already have donated: If you could tell your friends and neighbors how important clean sidewalks and streets are to you – and encourage them to donate — it would go a long way toward helping BVNA achieve the goal we share.

For decades, the Ninth Street Italian Market has drawn residents and visitors alike to soak in the sights, sounds, and, oh!, the smells of its fruit-laden stalls, tantalizing meat- and cheese-filled windows, and cannoli-stocked shelves. Once brimming with the foodstuffs of Italy, these days it’s also a go-to for those shopping for Vietnamese or Mexican ingredients such as lychee or taco shells.

For an inside look at all that is old — and new — in the Market, join Liana Ottaviani as she leads a walking tour on Saturday, October 21 . A member of the Fante’s family, Liana is generously donating her time and knowledge as part of a fundraising effort for Bella Vista Neighbors Association, an independent and non-profit organization serving the residents of the community.

The tour meets at 9am at the Visitor’s Center and lasts for approximately 2.5 hours as walkers meander through the market. Meet the current owners of famiy-owned businesses like Claudio’s and Fante’s, learn about their histories, sample their wares, and collect discounts along the way.

Tickets are $25 and the tour is limited to 15 participants. This is a rain or shine event. We regret that we are unable to offer refunds. If you find you are unable to attend after purchasing a ticket, please let us know so we may be able to offer your place on the tour to someone on the waiting list.

BVNA Sidewalk and Curb Cleaning Fundraising Initiative

We’re excited to announce that, in 2018, Bella Vista Neighbors Association has launched a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of paid sidewalk and curb sweeping in our neighborhood.

Clean streets are healthy streets, they attract visitors and customers, reduce crime, unclog our storm drains, and restore a sense of neighborhood pride.

We recognize that many of you are already doing your part to sweep up the sidewalk in front of your home, and even pitch in to clean up surrounding blocks. Unfortunately, it is not enough – as can be readily seen on a walk through the neighborhood. There are many blocks where, for a variety of reasons, the volume of litter simply outpaces the volunteer capacity.

BVNA regularly hears from residents that litter is their primary concern.

In response, BVNA has partnered with ACAM — a service already used in nearby Queen Village and South Street Headhouse District — to sweeps the curbs and sidewalks of our numbered streets (6th-11th and Passyunk), and cross streets (Bainbridge, Fitzwater, Catharine, Christian, Carpenter, and the north side of Washington Ave) within our borders. (Two blocks of S 9th, Washington to Christian, are excluded, as the area is overseen by the 9th Street United Merchants Association and has unique logistics and needs).

2018 was our inaugural year, and with your help, we were able to reach our goal of $25,000, which allowed us to sweep every other week from April to December. Workers collected and removed 849 bags, or 10.61 tons worth of litter from our neighborhood.

We are currently re-launching our fundraising efforts in order to be able to perform this service again in 2019. We need to raise $30,000 which will allow us to sweep weekly in 2019, from March to December. We hope you can partner with us in making that a reality. We can’t maintain this program without neighborhood support .

Bella Vista Q&A: Preventing Car Thefts

Question: We heard there was a recent uptick in thefts from cars and car thefts. What can Bella Vista residents do about this?

Answer: There has been a recent increase in car thefts and thefts from automobiles in the 3rd Police District. Many of these thefts are done by opportunistic thieves who are looking for quick cash or to use a vehicle in a robbery. There are some things we can do to reduce the opportunity for these crimes.

Question: What can we do?

Answer: One of the simplest things a car owner can do is to lock your car doors and take the keys. Opportunistic thieves look for those opportunities, so if you start your car to warm it up and leave the keys in it, then you are creating an opportunity for the car thief. If you jump out of your car and leave it running to go to an ATM or grab something at a store, you are giving the thieves an opportunity. To remove these opportunities, just don’t leave the keys in the car!

Question: What about the thefts from the cars? How can we stop those?

Answer: Again, this is how we can remove the situational opportunities for crimes. If a small-time drug user needs cash to buy drugs, he or she is desperate and will look for opportunities such as walking down the street looking for items that can sell for cash quickly. So, if your car has items that can be easily stolen and sold, remove them from your car. Things like leaving your car phone connected to the charger, the thief can easily steal and sell those items. Don’t leave anything of valuable visible in your car. It only takes seconds to smash a window and steal something of value. Don’t leave briefcases, purses, bags and even change in the cup holder. All of these make attractive targets for a thief.

Question: But it is so inconvenient to have to take everything out of my car each day!

Answer: Yes, it is an inconvenience, but so is having to get a window replaced in your car or having to make an insurance claim. A little planning can save you time and ultimately money as well.

Question: Is there anything else we can do to help prevent these types of crimes?

Answer: Yes, being an alert neighbor. If you see someone suspicious in your neighborhood, like someone going car-to- car, trying the car doors; call 911 immediately. Try to provide as best a description of what they person looks like and call 911. There is a link to a Suspect Identification car on the Bella Vista Neighborhood website which can aid you with that description. But don’t hesitate to call 911 to report suspicious people or activities.

With the success of last year’s Flea Market, the Friends of Nebinger will be holding its 2nd Annual Flea Market on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Nebinger schoolyard at 601 Carpenter Street. This is the same weekend as the Italian Market Festival and our goal is to exceed the $700 raised last year.

This is a community fundraiser for the G. W. Nebinger Elementary School with proceeds going to replace the current auditorium stage curtains, that are dry rotted and coming apart, with new ones. Trees must be planted in the ground on private property in Philadelphia and there is a limit of 1 tree per address. These trees can NOT BE PLANTED IN A CONTAINER OR THE SIDEWALK.

There will also be a WEIRD WASTE RECYCLING event on site. Bring used batteries, light bulbs, plastic bags, and hangers for recycling by Bennett Compost, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, and MyMilkcrate.

Keep in mind that filling out the registrationÂ form does not guarantee that you will receive a tree. You will receive a ticket at the end of registration, that you must print and bring to pick up. The giveaway is an all-volunteer effort and while we will do our best to match everyone registered with the tree they selected, nursery shortages can occur and mistakes may happen. We will send you a reminder and may also phone reminders.

RegistrantsÂ MUST pick up RESERVED trees from 10 am to noon . After 12, all remaining trees will be available to wait list members or walk-ins. This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.

Today BVNA is kicking off a 30-day comment period for neighbors to weigh in one more time on the zoning maps we got back from the Planning Commission.

Since this past winter, we’ve been collecting feedback from Bella Vista neighbors in several community forums and an online survey to guide the Planning Commission as they update our neighborhood’s zoning map. Zoning rules determine what type of buildings can be built and where, and what people are allowed to do in them, which has a big impact on how our neighborhood grows. Here is a basic guide Â [PDF]Â to what the different zoning categories mean.

We’ve been really impressed with the level of engagement in this process, and especially with how much people seem to be on the same page about what makes our neighborhood great, and how it can become even greater in the years ahead.

These new maps are the result of all the community input we received, but we obviously didn’t hear from every person in the neighborhood, so we’ll be collecting feedback for the next 30 days in hopes of getting more voices and any final ideas incorporated into the plan.

Bike Share Location Meeting – March 24, 2015, 7 pm

This Tuesday, March 24, 7 pm at Palumbo Rec (10th and Fitzwater) the Bella Vista Neighbors Association will be hosting a second public meeting about possible bike share station locations and we need your feedback .

Bella Vista Neighbors Association is currently deciding whether to endorse two possible station locations, one station, or none of the stations for Phase 1 of the bike share roll-out this spring. Before we decide, we want to get more input from our neighbors.

Option 1: In the street next to Palumbo on the 900 block of Fitzwater at the northeast corner of 10th Street. The Palumbo station would replace one curb parking space. (Note: traffic engineer has confirmed that just 1 space would be removed, not 2 as presented at the last meeting.)

Option 2: On the sidewalk behind the Rite Aid at 9th and Catharine on Darien Street.

We are holding this meeting on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 pm where the Mayorâ€™s office will present the choices and community members can give us more feedback.

If you havenâ€™t heard about it yet, Philadelphia will be joining over 60 US cities this spring in rolling out a new bike share system called Indego . Bike share will provide the city with a new transportation network, allowing users to access bikes for point-to-point trips for a fee. You will be able to take a bike from one station, and drop it off at another.

The city released an initial map Â of where these stations will be located, and members of the community noticed there were no stations planned for Bella Vista. Â A representative from the Mayorâ€™s Office of Transportation and Utilities Â came to our general meeting on March 12th with initial proposals.

Overall, the Wellness mural and its circular design represent the communal and cyclical process of seeking wholeness and wellness in our own lives and within our communities.

BVNA Works with Crosstown Coalition and Gets Results

Philadelphia City Council President Clarke recently proposed the creation of a new Department of Planning and Development , a change that would distribute the responsibilities of the Department of Licenses and Inspections in what is characterized as a new streamlined process for development. Â Such a move would also require the approval of voters in a charter change. Â After just a one hour hearing where civic groups, developers, and the Crosstown Coalition, an association of civic group board members from across the city (BVNA is a member), pleaded for more time to understand the change, the resolution for the new department moved out of committee. Troubled by the lack of input and the absence of consideration of the recent report by the Mayor’s Special Independent Advisory Commission created in response to the building collapse at 22nd and Market, the Crosstown Coalition Committee on Zoning and Land Use sent a letter to Council President Clarke asking for more time for public input. Â Yesterday, Clarke announced he would heed this request.

Civic groups can indeed have an impact on the city.

Bella Vista Neighbors Association is working with the Planning Commission to remap Bella Vista’s zoning, and we need to hear from you.

The survey is not binding in any way – it’s just an initial exercise to take the neighborhood’s temperature on some of the key issues that will be decided over the next year, and help us focus the remapping conversation going forward.

For those just tuning in, the city’s 2012 zoning reforms set off a planning and remapping process that every neighborhood will eventually complete. The Planning Commission has completed its comprehensive Central District Plan, which encompasses most of Bella Vista (the rest is in the South District Plan, just now getting underway.) Now that phase is done, and we begin the remapping phase where we’ll take a really close look at what types of buildings can be built and where, and establish some clearer rules of the road for building new buildings in Bella Vista. The area we’re looking at is bordered by 6th, 11th, Washington, and South.

This is your chance to think long term about the neighborhood’s future, and share your ideas for ensuring that Bella Vista continues to grow as a great place to live, work, and play over the next 10, 20 years and beyond. There will be a whole process of public planning charrettes and meetings over the next year, where you’ll be able to contribute your ideas, and help us come up with a package of changes that, in the final phase, will become a bill introduced by Councilman Squilla.

In keeping with prior holiday traditions, the South Street Police Detail “Mini-Station” is continuing its efforts to uplift families which may be experiencing difficulties for reasons beyond their control. This year we have partnered with the Philadelphia-based organization â€œWomen Against Abuse.” This organization places emphasis on women and children who may be in situations abusive in nature and provides them with the needed services to remove themselves from those environments.

They also provide the needed life skills necessary to sustain success after they have transitioned from the shelters back to life on their own. Currently the program has three shelters which service approximately 150 children of various ages and 90 parents.Â Our goal is to have at least 200 toys donated to these children as well as miscellaneous items for the parents.

On Thursdays in December starting next week, crews of the “men in blue” will be working in Bella Vista to remove trash from sidewalks. The city does not offer routine street cleaning in our area. The City Planning Commission will give a presentation on some proposed zoning changes in Bella Vista, and receive public comments on December 9, 2014 at 7:00 pm** at Palumbo Rec Center (10th and Fitzwater). This is a very important conversation for our community to have. Because our area has been growing a lot in recent years, this is an opportunity to have a conversation about our vision for how this neighborhood should grow over the next 10, 20, or 30 years.

The Planning Commission has proposed only minor changes to about 12 properties in our area, most of which would reduce the scale of what can be built “by-right.” (translation: can be built simply by pulling a building permit, without triggering a political approval process.)

Some parcels would be down-zoned from RM-1 (which allows multi-family or single-family residential) to RSA-5 (which only allows single-family residential). Interestingly, the triangle of land at Christian, E. Passyunk, and 6th would be down-zoned from CMX-1 (which would allow, but not require, a ground-floor storefront with housing above) to RSA-5, which would not allow a storefront.

This is your opportunity to weigh in on the Planning Commission’s vision or propose a different vision, and have a conversation with your neighbors about the future of development in the greatest neighborhood in Philadelphia.

On Friday, September 25, a group over twenty volunteers from Ready, Willing & Able, Vanguard, and Bella Vista Neighbors Association completed a series of community service projects in and outside of Palumbo Recreation Center (10th and Fitzwater). The day’s activities included: tree tending, graffiti removal, and trash and debris removal.

They loosened up the soil in 26 tree pits, pulled the weeds from them and the surrounding sidewalk, and put a layer of mulch around the trees. Â With this work done and the trash and debris removed from the sidewalks and curbs, the area around the park was much improved. They also removed excess clay soil from two tree pits and from a corner of the Rec Center.

The whole group had lunch together in the large meeting room at the Rec Center, supplied by Ready, Willing & Able.

It was a beautiful sunny Friday and work began at 9:30 amÂ and ended atÂ 12:30 pm. Thank you to all!

PPD Community Relations Officer Juan “Ace” Delgado will be on hand to provide information and enroll neighbors in the SafeCam program . Security cameras on private property cannot only be helpful in protecting your home, but assist the police in solving crime in residential neighborhoods where commercial surveillance cameras are often lacking. Officer Delgado will have info on Operation ID , a property registration program, and the PPD’s bicycle registration program.

Although still regarded as one of the safest neighborhoods in the city, BV has experienced troubling crime recently. BVNA is planning a General Meeting with police leadership from our area and Councilman Mark Squilla to address neighbors’ public safety concerns. This meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, 7:30 pm, at Palumbo Rec Center. Stay tuned to BNVA’s news and Facebook page for details.

AVI And Property Taxes

BVTW continues to work on the property tax issue along with many other civic groups as part of the Crosstown Coalition of Taxpayers. We have compiled forms for the Homestead Exemption, the Senior Tax Freeze, and First-Level OPA appeals, as well as relevant bills being debated in City Council.

As Councilman Squilla said at a March 7 BVTW forum on AVI, you can help by contacting other Council members, in particular the seven At-Large members, who represent us, letting them know your concerns about the process and the huge tax increases we are facing.

Right now, the deadline for filing the First-Level appeal is still March 31. The Crosstown Coalition has requested an extension, but we don’t know if it will be granted. Check back here for updates.
